TOWN OF CANANDAIGUA VICTIM OF HACKING ATTEMPT RANSOMWARE

(Canandaigua, NY) - Town Manager Doug Finch announced that the computer network of the Town of Canandaigua came under attack by hackers on October 12, 2020, when they attempted to lock data in exchange for money from the Town.

No personal information was compromised, and all personal information of our employees and our residents is safe due to the policies enabled by our Town Board and the work of our staff,” said Finch.

Hackers accessed the standard files on the main network likely through a phishing attempt. The main network includes information like planning documents, resolutions, and other general public information.  The data was locked by the hackers as they attempted to extort money in exchange for the data.  Current clean backup data is available and will be restored once the system is reprogrammed.  The Town will not be paying the ransomware demand.

The Town is cooperating with authorities.  The Town of Canandaigua recently was awarded a grant from the NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services to conduct a risk assessment analysis in anticipation of such an attack.  The process to undertake that effort had not yet started and is now commencing.

The Town of Canandaigua does not store information such as credit card information or other personal information, and uses a separate system for online payments that is not part of the network that was compromised.

Anyone with any concerns or questions is encouraged to contact the Town Manager.   Email communication is safe with the Town of Canandaigua.

The Town Board next meets on October 19, 2020 at the Town Hall at 6:00pm.  The agenda will likely include an update on the progress being made.  The agenda will most likely be smaller than normal, and Board Members will be asked to consider a second meeting in October.
