A unique parcel with access to Canandaigua Lake that has been privately owned by the Kellogg family since the early 1970s has recently come on the market for sale. The property at Tichenor Point has a historic past including the Seneca Nation of Indians, a Science Camp for boys for the Free Academy and Mechanics Institute (now R.I.T.), and a steamboat landing spot on Canandaigua Lake. The Kellogg family, who is selling the property, has a unique history to the greater Canandaigua community known for the famous Kelloggs Pan-Tree Inn (founded in 1924) that previously was located on Lakeshore Drive in the City of Canandaigua and the family's generous contributions to the community including their support of Sonnenberg Gardens among others.
The parcel at Tichenor Point, in the Town of Canandaigua, has been featured in the Democrat and Chronicle and in the Daily Messenger. The parcel is generating interest from developers for development purposes having unmatched views of Canandaigua Lake, while also drawing the attention of the Town of Canandaigua for a possible park for preservation of the existing historic buildings and unmatched access and views of the lake. Additional photos may be found by clicking here.
Residents of the Town of Canandaigua for years now have requested the Town Board explore opportunities for additional access for the public to Canandaigua Lake. When sureyed as part of the Town's Comprehensive Plan, residents were asked "Should the Town develop public lakefront access?" to which 61.5% responded yes, and 38.5% responded no. The makeup of the 61.5% included 74.2% for swimming, 67.0% for picnicking, 47.8% for fishing, 36.8% for small craft launch, and 45.6% for trails.
On behalf of the Town Board of the Town of Canandaigua, the Town Manager is helping to explore the option of the parcel located at 4351 Tichenor Point Drive as a possible Town park through acquisition of the land by the Town. If acquired the land would provide the public with a unique experience to enjoy Canandaigua Lake with an unblocked view to the North and South of Canandaigua Lake from Tichenor Point. Future plans would likely envision a small parking area off of County Road 16/Tichenor Point Drive, a swimming area along the shallow ledge of Canandaigua Lake at the cove, a fishing area, and a non-motorized small craft launch. The existing buildings would be preserved, and it is envisioned the main cabin would be utilized as a museum to allow visitors a glimpse back in time at a turn of the century cottage on the Lake during a steamboat landing era passed.
As we explore this option with our residents we will provide additional information on this page so everyone has access to it. Please feel free to email and ask any questions.
The Town of Canandaigua is committeed to hearing from residents about this unique opportunity while also looking to mitigate any impact that the neighboring property owners might have as much as possible. The Town would very much be willing to consider vegetative buffers, and other controls to limit the impact for residents.
Please know the Town is very interested in hearing from residents about this proposal.
Sincerely,
Doug Finch, Town Manager
