Backflow Devices

Backflow is a term used in plumbing for an unwanted flow of water in the reverse direction of the normal flow of the public water supply. It can be a serious health risk for the contamination of potable water supplies with foul water. A backflow can occur when a substance flows back into the public water system as water pressure fluctuates due to a water line break or hydrant usage. Backflow prevention devices prohibit dangerous contaminants from being drawn into the water system by restricting the flow of water to only one direction.

Reduced Pressure Zone devices, or RPZs, are required when you have an irrigation system, automatic pool filling device, or commercial business on a property that has water service. The first step is to have a licensed engineer complete the required NYS Dept. of Health Application for Approval of Backflow Prevention Devices (click here for document) and submit that application with all required schematics, blueprints, and plans to the water department, you will need to submit 3 copies to the Water Superintendent’s office. Your application will then be submitted to the NYS Dept. of Health, it will take up to 16 weeks for processing and approval. Plans are required to be submitted by a licensed engineer only.

Backflow devices are required by state law to be inspected annually by a licensed plumber and a report submitted to the town using the NYS Dept. of Health form ‘Report on Test and Maintenance of Backflow Prevention Device’ (click here for document).
