Proposed Changes to Onanda Park Uplands (2023)
Updates on Onanda Park Development and Tree Removal
Dear Canandaigua Community,
We appreciate resident feedback regarding recent changes at Onanda Park, particularly concerning the tree removal in the area of the cabin addition and road improvements. We understand that the changes to the park can be concerning, and we want to take a moment to clarify the reasons behind some of the decisions that have been made.
As you’ve noticed, there have been trees removed in areas that might seem unnecessary at first glance. The primary purpose of this tree clearing was to create space for critical infrastructure improvements, including the new parking lots, stormwater management facilities, retaining walls, and the relocation of the bathhouse. Some of the trees that were removed were not part of the immediate construction zone but were cleared to accommodate these essential developments.
Additionally, the construction of the new road, which features a switchback, is a necessary measure to comply with town code. This design ensures that the grade of the road does not exceed a 10% slope, which is required for both safety and accessibility for all users, including public safety personnel. The road will be a safer route for emergency vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances, ensuring that our park remains accessible and safe for all visitors.
We recognize that mature trees are a vital part of the park's natural beauty, offering shade, wildlife habitat, and soil stability. We share your love of these trees and are committed to preserving as many as possible. We understand that the removal of trees can feel like a significant change, but the overall goal of this project is to enhance the park, making it a more enjoyable and sustainable destination for the community.
As with any large-scale project, there will always be differing opinions, and we truly value your input. We believe that the end result will be a park that not only meets the needs of our growing community but also provides a lasting space for recreation and connection to nature. We hope the improvements will be appreciated by all visitors for years to come.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding!
