TOWN OF CANANDAIGUA DEVELOPMENT AGENCIES COLLABORATE TO ADDRESS OPPORTUNITIES
FOR GROWTH IN THE COMMUNITY
Organizations Charged with Development Oversight Conduct First Joint Meeting –
Discuss Balanced Growth and Projection of Quality of Life
June 11, 2024
A collection of agencies charged with oversight of development activity in the Town of Canandaigua convened this week to review overarching planning strategies and to discuss opportunities to streamline development, encourage balanced growth, and protect Canandaigua Lake and other assets that foster a strong quality of life in the community.
The Town Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board, and Environmental Conservation Board met in a Joint Session on June 10th. Each agency was charged with reviewing relevant elements of the 2021 Comprehensive Plan for the Town and identifying gaps and opportunities to ensure alignment between regulations, review processes, and development strategies.
After productive discussion, the collective bodies identified the following priorities for near term improvement:
- A review of the Residential Lake District to ensure that regulations provide for protection of Canandaigua Lake and other natural resources, while affording property owners the ability to sensibly improve their property;
- A review of the Form Based Code in Uptown Canandaigua. This newest development district will require early and continued attention to ensure that the Town is achieving the goals of dense, mixed-use development, without unreasonably burdening investors;
- A review of the 2021 Future Land Use Map portion of the Comprehensive Plan to ensure that it is reflective of current goals for development.
Each participating board will be charged with individual review of these regulatory tools and associated recommendations to the Town Board for enhancements. The Town Board will then consider necessary changes to advance Canandaigua toward its vision.
“Canandaigua remains an incredibly attractive community for investment and growth. Collaborative efforts like this joint work session will ensure that we remain competitive for investment, while protecting and enhancing our renowned quality of life,” said Town Supervisor Jared Simpson, who chaired the joint session.
Boards will commence work immediately on these priorities, and the Town Board intends to convene similar sessions regularly in the future.
