Temporary Closure of Canandaigua Town Beaches for Water Safety Precautions

Canandaigua, [July 11, 2023] - The Town of Canandaigua announces the temporary closure of both beaches operated by the Town of Canandaigua as a precautionary measure, following recent water sampling conducted after the storm event on July 9, 2023. The test results today, July 11, 2023, indicated elevated levels of sediment debris, exceeding common standards, due to the ingress of storm-related debris into Canandaigua Lake.

In order to prioritize the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors, the decision has been made to close the West Lake Road Schoolhouse beach and the Onanda Park beach until further notice. This temporary closure will remain in effect while additional water sampling and testing are conducted to ensure the water quality meets the necessary standards for recreational use.

Town Manager Doug Finch expressed regret about the temporary closure but emphasized the Town's commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors. "While we understand the inconvenience caused by the closure of our beaches, we prioritize the well-being of our community members and visitors. This precautionary step allows us to thoroughly evaluate and address any potential risks. We will keep the public informed as we progress and work diligently towards reopening the beaches," Finch stated.

Parks Director Lindsay Frarey reiterated the Town's dedication to maintaining a safe environment for all. She said, "We recognize the impact that the recent storm event has had on our community, disrupting many of our normal activities. Our primary concern is the safety of our residents and visitors. While it is unfortunate that the beaches must remain closed, we must prioritize everyone's well-being."

Water Superintendent Jim Fletcher reassures the community that the drinking water remains safe for consumption. He stated, "We want to assure everyone that the drinking water in the Town of Canandaigua is unaffected by the recent storm and subsequent water sampling. The drinking water supply that is purchased by the town of Canandaigua from the City of Canandaigua meets all Department of Health requirements and it remains safe to drink."

City Manager John Goodwin stated the treated drinking water remains safe for consumption. He stated, "We want to assure everyone that the drinking water is treated safely, and tested and monitored regularly. We have implemented measures to safeguard the drinking water supply, and it remains safe to drink."

Onanda Park will remain open, with all activities deemed safe for visitors. However, the beach area will be closed until further notice, pending additional water sampling and testing. The Town of Canandaigua will promptly notify the public once both beaches are deemed safe and reopened for recreational use.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay updated on the latest information regarding the beach closures by visiting the Town of Canandaigua website or contacting the Town Manager's Office at 585-394-1120.
