Town of Canandaigua Beaches Re-Opening

CANANDAIGUA, NY - [7/13/23] - The Town of Canandaigua is pleased to announce that after thorough water quality testing, Onanda Park Beach and Butler Road Schoolhouse Beach will be re-opened to the public. The recent lab analysis, conducted on July 12, 2023, has provided reassuring results.

Water samples were collected as a precautionary measure following the heavy storm event that occurred on July 9, 2023. The Town of Canandaigua, in collaboration with the City of Canandaigua and Ontario County, prioritized the safety of our residents and visitors by ensuring comprehensive lab testing for water quality.

The enumerated E. coli results for the analyzed samples are as follows:

- Butler: 220 cfu/100ml
- Onanda: 60 cfu/100ml

Following the initial results, the temporary closure of both beaches was initiated as a precautionary measure as the results indicated rates higher than 250 cfu/100ml. However, subsequent water sampling and testing have shown that the water quality now meets the necessary standards for recreational use.

Town Supervisor Jared Simpson expressed his excitement about the re-opening of the beaches, stating, "We are thrilled to announce the re-opening of Onanda Park Beach and Butler Road Schoolhouse Beach. The safety and enjoyment of our community members and visitors are of utmost importance to us. We appreciate their patience and understanding during the temporary closure and look forward to seeing families and friends enjoying the beautiful beaches once again."

Town Manager Doug Finch expressed his gratitude for the community's understanding and emphasized the Town's commitment to safety. He stated, "We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our community members and visitors during this period. The temporary closure was necessary to ensure their well-being. We are pleased to announce the reopening of Onanda Park Beach and Butler Road Schoolhouse Beach and look forward to seeing everyone enjoying these beautiful spaces again."

Parks Director Lindsay Frarey highlighted the diverse range of recreational activities available at Onanda Park, stating, "Onanda Park offers a multitude of options for outdoor enthusiasts and families to enjoy. From the recreation and game room to hiking in the upland trail, fishing, tennis, pickleball, beach volleyball, and exploring the playground, there is something for everyone. The park also provides ample green space next to the picturesque Canandaigua Lake. We encourage visitors to take advantage of these wonderful amenities while being mindful that the Barnes Gully Trail will remain closed due to the saturated ground resulting from the recent storm events. We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure the safety and preservation of our natural areas."

For the latest updates on the beach re-openings, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Town of Canandaigua website or contact the Town Hall at 585-394-1120.
